Start-Rite Mary Jane Shoes – objects which prompt memory.

I have kept a small number of my offspring's clothes and shoes as keepsakes of their childhood.  Holding these items reminds me of when they were small and prompts memories of specific events and places.  One of the most powerful objects for me is a tiny pair of my daughter’s Start-Rite Mary Jane shoes. The leather still retains the imprint and creases made by her toddler foot, and scuffs on the toes.

I have made various iterations of these shoes, using a variety of medium.  The intaglio prints of the shoes are my favourites. The action of rubbing on and rubbing off the ink was reminiscent of cleaning and polishing shoes.

Shoes clearly hold fond memories for many of us.  I have been surprised and delighted that my print has prompted so many stories from people about shoes they or their children have owned.
